CUJO PANIC

Out of control aging rockers from Eastern Virginia

Cutler, Johan, Pat, Nicole and occasionally Dennis got together to prove to themselves (and the world) that making music at their age (late forties/early fifties) was both therapeutic and rewarding. A full description of their remarkable trans-continental journey can be found below.

The name "Cujo Panic" is a concatenation of the first letters of the original band member's first names. "Cu" comes from Culter (the guitar player), "Jo" from Johan (the drummer), "Pa" from Pat (the bass player and singer) and "Nic" from Nicole (the other singer).

Please listen to their songs and judge for yourselves. As most of you can tell, their recordings are single takes and without any practice runs, pitch correction or extreme ProTooling. At their age, every second counts and the dream to make it big has long gone. They don't even care if there are a few (hundred) mistakes, they're too busy having fun. If this bugs you though, please feel free to search YouTube for that elusive "talent" but don't be disappointed if you can't find it.

On the other side, they don’t mind if you listen to the music of their friends since they are convinced that the appealing Cujo Panic “slop” rock will bring you back soon enough.

The Members

Cutler - Guitar

After work and family duties are complete, nothing is better than making noise with some of your best friends! With an electric guitar plugged in and turned to eleven one can escape to that special place of abstract obsession. The obsession began with the sweet sounds of rock and roll’s founding fathers like Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. Then came the melody of Michael Schenker and the hook was set. To this day there is great enjoyment in emulating those gods as well as creating new music (albeit bad religion). When you can do this with your truest friends then how can you go wrong!

Johan - Drums

Grew up in the Netherlands and has been playing the drums since the mid 70’s. Favorite drummers include Tico Torres (Bon Jovi), Cesar Zuiderwijk (Golden Earring), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) and Steve Gadd (Paul Simon and Eric Clapton). Unfortunately, none of these influences helped his sloppy drumming but he is tolerated in Cujo Panic because he owns all the equipment. Johan married Nicole (see below) for her good looks and great voice (see journey section on how they hooked up). He also played in Hippo and Mid-Life Crisis (MLC) (a well deserved name). For more on Johan, please see his website

Pat - Bass and Vocals

Who ever thought that singing in the Bridgeport (CT) Boys Choir would lead to this? Influences like Paul McCartney, Gene Simmons, Phil Lynott and Geddy Lee (All Singing Bass Players), paved the way for his musical adventures! Pat picked up his first Bass in Tulsa, OK in 1979, a no name Fender copy, and never looked back! The First Band he was in, he was the Light Guy so that didn't count! But playing in front of a crowd was always a rush for him and he'll never stop living the dream! Cujo Panic was another incredible experience with Great Musicians and More Importantly Great Friends!

Nicole - Vocals

Also grew up in the Netherlands and has been singing with her family, in bands and in the shower since the early 70’s. Nicole’s musical career was ignited by her mom’s opera talent, her brother’s guitar playing, her sister’s singing and believe it or not, The Rolling Stones. Nicole is married to Johan (not for his stunning good looks but simply for his money) and they have two children. Her other interests include bowling, painting and shopping (which is where the money comes in handy). Nicole also sang in Hippo and Mid-Life Crisis (MLC)

The European Story

Johan grew up in Bergen op Zoom, a small town (~40.000 people) in the south of the Netherlands and developed a great interest in electronics in the early seventies. At the age of 14, he collected first generation TV sets (to reuse the tubes) and through his parents he met a Phillips research engineer who donated boxes full of experimental electronic parts and tons of old electronics magazines. Johan read every one of those magazines and soon started to build fun projects like radios, oscilloscopes and amplifiers. At the age of 16, he even build a small 'computer' based on Intel's very first chip. The Intel 4004 based JoGo computer (as in Johan Goossens) was battery powered, had 40 bytes of memory (no, we did not forget the word kilo, mega or giga), switches and push buttons for input and 4 red LEDs for output.

Slowly the electronics obsession turned to music and soon enough speaker cabinets, amplifiers, effects boxes and light shows were created. Initially, Johan ran a 'mobile disco' with friends but playing DJ was not satisfying enough so after discussions with school buddies, Johan, Willem and Marc decided to start a band. Marc was a classically trained acoustic guitar player who could sing very well, Willem decided to learn the bass and Johan added percussion to his list of obsessions.

As with most teenage bands, the early days were rough and the band quickly went through a number of different lineups. Johan and Marc remained a constant, Marc's sisters (Nicole and Vivianne) added great vocals, Leo and later Don (no mafia connections) replaced Willem on bass and finally Suus and later Ruud added electronic piano/keyboard to the mix. "Hippo" became a popular local band but in the early 80's, military service and other real life interruptions made the band members drift apart.

As in most bands, the drummer gets the pretty girl and during the Hippo years, Johan started to date Nicole. In 1982 they moved to Germany and in 1988 they got married and moved to the US. Today Nicole and Johan live in Virginia Beach and have two great kids. After years of not playing in a band, Johan started Mid-Life Crises (MLC) in 1999 and very soon Nicole joined the band. An old passion was rediscovered and lots of dollars later, The Goossens' house was full of PA equipment, a recording studio and a light show. Who says you need brains or talent when you have money?

The American Story

A work relationship between Cutler and Pat turned into a mutual respect and friendship in terms of an appreciation and historical perspective of rock music. After several years of discussion and attending live concerts (with a few beverages), Pat finally said ‘we’re jamming’! The second annual SwampFest found a motley crew of individuals putting together the most unusual band. Influences of the band members went from Oasis and the Hives, to Scorpions and Metallica. But it worked with Pat acting as Paul Schafer. The next SwampFest, Pat put together a more cohesive group with the addition of Chris on drums. This early incarnation of Crumb was truly able to rock and always had a great time doing it.

Worlds Colliding

When hurricane Isabel hit Hampton Roads everyone got to know their neighbors better. Johan, who had been living behind Cutler for a few years, came over and introduced himself along with an offer to borrow his generator. The conversation quickly turned to music and not long after he was helping Crumb by recording and mixing our music (his 2nd forte behind percussion). When they first jammed together it was very comfortable as the songs flowed as easily as the malt beverage.
